Guest review: Chuck Anderson, NoPattern on Sour Patch Kids! Chuck of NoPattern ate this on March 24, 2010

I’m as inconsistent a person as they come. Always changing my mind on things last minute, asking to be the last to order when out to eat with friends while I try to decide what I feel like. There’s more truth to my company’s name “NoPattern” than you probably realize. But one thing I know for sure is that Sour Patch Kids are, without fail, my favorite snack. If I’m in the checkout line and get a sweet tooth, I know just what will do the trick, I think. Maybe. Pretty sure.  That’s saying something for a person like me. Sour Patch Kids get my full endorsement as an all-time “go-to” snack. The sourness is the best part. Actually the sweet part is. Well that depends. Well no it doesn’t. Well yes it does. Well whatever.

First word after your first bite?  How about other words?

Sour! Oh wait, now sweet! Then, before you know it, they’re gone. Just like that. innocent Sour Patch Children sacrificed for your enjoyment. Whatever, just grab another handful and do it again.

Did you finish the whole thing?

It depends on what size bag. They have the 5 oz. bags that you’ll finish faster than you meant to. Usually these are like .89 or .99 and you can’t help but grab it in the grocery store checkout line and finish it in the car ride home. Then there are the 8 oz. bags. I can finish an entire one easily, but I like to eat about 1/2 or 3/4 and save the rest for the next day, kind of like leftovers. Spread it out, you know? In these difficult economic times, you should really try to make the most of your snacks.

Would you buy it again?

Uhhh, is the internet so awesome? Does it get dark at night? Will you feel stupid paying $25 for overnight shipping on Zappo’s when you know they’ll just upgrade standard 5-7 day free shipping to overnight anyways? I think that should answer this question.

What kind of store did you find it at?

Sour Patch Kids are as ubiquitous a snack as they come. Grocery stores, gas stations, JoAnn Fabric checkout line. It’s safe to say that Sour Patch Kids have, in fact, gone viral.

Thoughts on the packaging?

Instantly recognizable in a store. The bright yellow and green are the perfect colors to describe the taste of Sour Patch Kids and the goofy little illustrations of the candies themselves are even better now that they’ve got those Sour Patch Kids commercials on TV all the time. Haven’t seen them ya turkey? Here’s a link ya doofus!

Did taste like it looks?

Chewy, sour, sweet, and fruity is how these look and taste. So, yeah, yup.

Sum up your experience eating this snack in one word.

Tartrazine.

High-brow or low-brow?

There’s nothing high-brow about these. You can eat them on the go, you can eat them at the show. You can eat them while you laugh even eat them in the grass! You can take them on a train or you can take them on a plane. You can eat them while you drive they make your tastebuds come alive. You might pucker lips at first but then you’ll get that sugary burst. Sour Patch Kids.

Napkin needed?

Not really, just rinse your hands off afterwards if you’re eating them outside in the summer. Maybe a little sticky from the sugar.

Best place to eat to this snack?

At the movies, preferably during a RomCom.

Anything else?

I once bought a bag of Sour Patch Kids at a theater and the candies themselves seemed bigger than the usual size. I mentioned this to my wife Holly and she asked “Are you sure they are Sour Patch Kids?” I answered, “As opposed to….what…Sour Patch Adults?”  I think we concluded that larger size bags contain larger size candies and vice versa. That’s my story.

I love Sour Patch Kids. Mmmmm! “You might pucker lips at first, but then you get that sugary burst”…too funny!

Best candy ever! I just found out they have even more flavors…Cherry, Blue Raspberry and Peach. They even have giant ones (like 2″ tall!) that come individually packaged.

If I am ever going to spend $8 on a bag of candy and be that annoying person in the movie theatre who krinkles their candy bag during moments of torrid onscreen, forbidden, passion, as in The Reader, It’s is going to be for a bag of Sour Patch kids. If I am ever going to write poorly rendered run on sentences about chewy sour goodness, it is going to be about Sour Patch kids. If I am ever going to feed my future infant son a candy when mom is is not looking, it will be sour patch kids.
